I have first started dancing in 1995, with the Middle East Technical
University Couple Dances Club. Since then, I cannot seem to
live without doing some type of dancing. Among my current obsessions
are:
Ballroom Dancing
I started ballroom dancing in 1995 in
Turkey. After coming to Ann Arbor, I have joined The University
of Michigan Ballroom Dance Club, where I
have learned most of the basics and totally got hooked to
dancing. In Fall 1997, with a
couple of friends from the club, we have founded The
University of Michigan Ballroom Dance Team, in an attempt to
advance beyond social dancing and participate in competitions. As
of December 1999, we have participated in 8 collegiate
competitions and some amateur competitions, where we valiantly
competed against other colleges and amateur couples.
Jazz Dance
My involvement with Jazz dance started
after I have seen the 1997 performance of the Jazz Dance
Theater, which is a local non-profit dance company, performing
twice every year in Ann Arbor. Since then, I have been in love
with Jazz Dance and I have been taking beginning I and II level
classes in Dance Theater Studio, from various
instructors. My goal is to participate in some sort of performance
on stage before I graduate.
Flamenco
In Fall 1999, I have joined the
Encompass-Flamenco group. We will perform on January 15, 2000 in
Michigan Theater, in the show Encompass, which is a
collective performance of various student groups, including
Impact Dance, 58 Greene and others. This is the
first time I am doing flamenco, but so far I like it. We will see
how this one proceeds.
